Pigrimages have been walked in
the Annapurna region to Muktinath for over 2300 years. This site
is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. In the Everest region Tibetan
Buddhist monasteries (gompas in the Sherpa language) exist in most
villages. The largest monastery is in Tengboche and the oldest is
in Pangboche and Thame. Many stupas (chorten in Sherpa and Tibetan
language) are evident throughout the Everest region.
